Armenia plans a nationwide clean-up campaign in the scope of Earth Hour initiative
Armenia is set to join Earth Hour global campaign to take place on Saturday, March 25 from 20:30 to 21:30, Deputy Head of Bioresources Management Agency at the Ministry of Nature Protection of Armenia told reporters. As explained, the event aims to create awareness of people about taking responsibility towards a sustainable future by turning the lights off.
“This year the topic of Armenia’s participation is entitled “Clear Armenia” that envisages a nationwide clean-up campaign with involvement of interested structures and wide layers of the society,” Vardenvanyan said, adding it will be a collective day-long effort aimed at removing and preventing the occurrence of waste throughout the republic.
Head of Investment Policy Department at RA Ministry of Territorial Administration Artashes Bakhshyan, present at the press conference, informed that hazardous waste cleanup locations are currently mapped in Armenian regions. 190 places were identified in Tavush region, while works are underway in other regions. Upon completion of the mapping, the classification of the cleanup locations will be made to establish priorities ahead of the planned campaign.
To note, Earth Hour started in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. This event saw 2.2 million homes and businesses turn their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change that year. Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating in 2008. Global landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the CN Tower in Toronto, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum, all stood in darkness for Earth Hour. In March 2009, hundreds of millions of people took part in the third Earth Hour.
To add, It’s already the 9th time Armenia participates in the initiative.
