No party ready to invest resources to the benefit of the regional security, political scientist says
Until recently the West was satisfied with articles criticizing Azerbaijan, today we see alternative mechanisms are being applied, political scientist Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan told reporters at a press conference on Monday, conditioning the change in the West’s approach with geopolitical developments, specifically in the West-Iran and West- Russia relations.
In the words of the expert, a balance of power of the geopolitical centers has been maintained in the region thus far, yet today the West tries to increase its leverage over the East through pressure on Azerbaijan. It is not ruled out other parties with respective interests in the region will come up with counteractions.
In the occurred situation, per the speaker, Armenia should make use of the opportunity and show the international community the civilizational difference with Azerbaijan.
“The next issue are the security guarantees for Armenia, actual especially since 2013 when the West-Russia cooperation ceased in the aftermath of the Ukraine conflict. We started to count on the combat preparedness of our armed forces in terms of containing the conflicts,” explained the expert.
“The mechanisms of containment are available today and can be quite efficient. We should work toward applying those mechanisms to ensure the regional security,” Melik-Shahnazaryan said, citing also lack of security invested in the region equally by the US, the EU, and Russia - be that of political, economic or financial nature.
“It seems everyone tries to derive benefits from the conflict,” he concluded.
