PACE fails to elect president today
The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) failed to elect a new president at the two rounds of voting held during the PACE autumn session, which kicked off today in Strasbourg.
Following the resignation of Pedro Agramunt as President of the Assembly, the proposed candidates Stella Kyriakides (Cyprus, EPP/CD) and Emanuelis Zingeris (Lithuania, EPP/CD) failed to obtain an absolute majority of the votes at the first round, with a second round of voting held afterwards. However, none of the candidates received an absolute majority of the votes again. Stella Kyriakides gained 121 votes and Emanuelis Zingeris – 69 votes.
A candidate is required to receive 152 votes for absolute majority.
To note, the PACE president so elected shall remain in office until the opening of the next ordinary session (22-26 January 2018).
