Israeli forces retaliate against Palestinian ‘day of rage’
Israeli-Palestinian clashes continued following US President Donald Trump’s decision on Wednesday to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, The Financial Times reported.
On Saturday morning, the Israeli military retaliated against rocket fire from the Palestinian Isamist Hamas group in Gaza, killing two Hamas gunmen in air strikes.
Thousands of Palestinians have clashed with Israeli security forces since Friday, which was declared a “day of rage” by Palestinians protesting against the decision to move the US Israeli embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
The Israel Defense Forces said about 3,000 Palestinians were taking part in “violent riots” in the West Bank and hundreds more along the border with Gaza, where protesters launched firebombs, rocks and burning tyres at security forces.
At least two Palestinians were killed on Friday, and more than 300 people wounded as Israeli forces used live ammunition, tear gas and rubber bullets against protesters, the source said.
On Friday Israel said its aircraft bombed militant targets in Gaza, with the Palestinian health ministry reporting that at least 25 people were wounded, including six children. Israel said it carried out the strikes on a militant training camp and on a weapons depot in response to rockets fired earlier from Gaza at Israeli towns.
