U.S. Treasury promises fresh Russia sanctions in next 30 days
The United States has pledged to impose new sanctions on Russia within a month in retaliation for Moscow’s alleged meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, the Moscow Times reported.
“You can expect sanctions will be coming in the next 30 days,” a Bloomberg reporter quoted U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin as saying at a UCLA speech on Monday.
“We are enforcing all the existing sanctions and putting more on place,” Mnuchin was cited as saying.
The secretary has long pledged to act on the sanctions bill signed into law in August 2017.
At a White House briefing on Friday, Mnuchin told reporters that the U.S. is working on Russia sanctions. “I can assure you that is in the process. I will be back here within the next several weeks to talk about that,” he said, according to Reuters.
Mnuchin stressed that the Treasury Department did produce unclassified and classified reports related to the sanctions, as required under the 2017 law. The public version of the reports included a list of wealthy Russians - so-called oligarchs - said to be close to the Kremlin.
“I’ve repeatedly said we are working on sanctions as a follow-up to that,” Mnuchin said.
