New Armenian officials have to prove their professionalism, analyst says
The recent appointments of some individuals from the close circle of the new Armenian authorities were not accepted unanimously by the Armenian society and media.
Sipan Pashinyan, a nephew of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and Narek Babayan, the husband of Yelk faction MP Lena Nazaryan, have been appointed to senior positions at the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Development, a move that sparked heated debates among the exert circles.
Political analyst Styopa Safaryan, who heads the Armenian Institute of International and Security Affairs, voiced his concerns about the new appointments in a post on Facebook, saying, “Later it will be hard to prove that it is a popular government.”
Speaking to Panorama.am, the analyst says the new authorities naturally give priority to the ‘political loyalty’, not considering a person’s professional qualities and biography, a practice typical to the previous authorities.
“It is highly important for the newly appointed officials to be not only sincere without any links to ‘dark’ actions, but also professional,” he said, meantime adding there should not be an impression that those sanding close to the new authorities cannot assume any responsible office.
Panorama.am has also talked to analyst Anush Sedrakyan over the issue. She claims it is hard to pick people who can be loyal and professional officials at the same time.
According to the analyst, the newly appointed officials have to prove their professionalism. “It is hard to make any comments at the moment since I do not know how the new cadres will work,” she said, adding the kinship ties of the newly-appointed officials will become an aggravating circumstance should they fail to succeed.
“It is not right to depreciate a person for being a relative to this or that official. Who knows how he/she will be doing at work!” she said.
