Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council has suggested imposing martial law in that country for a period of 60 days, its Secretary Alexander Turchinov has said, according to TASS.

"The National Security and Defense Council suggests imposing martial law for 60 days," he read out the decision of the council, which held its meeting in the small hours of Monday morning. The reason for the proposed move was the sitatuion in the Kerch Strait.

For his part, Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko called on members of the Verkhovna Rada (parliament) to come to its extraordinary meeting to endorse the National Security and Defense Council’s draft decision.

He stressed though that this decision does not mean any changes in the army’s actions in the Donbass region and implies no urgent mobilization. "That does not mean that Ukraine will conduct any offensive operations," he said, adding that Kiev will comply with the Minsk agreements.

On Sunday, November 25, The FSB’s border directorate for Crimea reported that three Ukrainian warships had illegally crossed Russia’s state border in the Black Sea and entered Russia’s territorial waters performing dangerous maneuvers. Later on, the FSB said that two more Ukrainian warships had sailed off from Berdyansk to join the three vessels. However, they later turned back.

All three Ukrainian Navy vessels, which violated the Russian state border, were detained in the Black Sea, with weapons used to force them to stop. Three wounded Ukrainian military servicemen received medical care, the FSB said, adding that there were no threat to their lives. A criminal case has been initiated over violation of Russia’s state border.
