A total of 2,592,486 voters are entitled to cast ballots in the snap parliamentary elections that kicked off in Armenia on Sunday morning, Chairman of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) Tigran Mukuchyan told reporters, commenting on the election process.

“465 citizens have already fulfilled their civil duty through online voting in the period from November 30 to December 2. The outcomes of online voting will be summed up today after the voting is over in Armenia,” he said.

The CEC head reminded that a total of 1444 candidates, including 12 ethnic minority representatives, are running for parliament in the election lists of nine parties and two blocs.

2010 polling stations have been set up for the parliamentary elections in Armenia, with 12 set to open in correctional facilities later today according to the Armenian law.

Mukuchyan said 4,000 technical equipment has been allocated to the local election commissions across Armenia, with all of them tested as of 8am.

He said the early parliamentary elections are proceeding smoothly. “At the moment, elections are taking place in a normal way,” Mukuchyan said.

The CEC is to brief on voter turnout every three hours, he added. The polling stations opened across Armenia at 8am will close at 8pm.

The 11 forces running in the elections are: the My Step bloc, We bloc, Prosperous Armenia Party, National Progress Party, Christian Democratic Revival Party, Sasna Tsrer party, Rule of Law party, Armenian Revolutionary Federation- Dashnaktsutyun (ARF-D) party, Bright Armenia party, Republican Party of Armenia, and Citizen's Decision Social-Democratic Party.
