Analyst: Armenia proves it can hold elections with unquestionable results

The December 9 early parliamentary elections came to prove that Armenia can hold elections the outcomes of which leave no doubts, political analyst Tevan Poghosyan told a news conference on Wednesday.

“It doesn’t matter if people made a choice consciously or unconsciously. The important thing is they have expressed their will freely,” he said.

Meantime, the analyst stressed the three political forces elected to the National Assembly should get engaged in lawmaking process from today on.

Commenting on the level of professionalism of the new parliament, he observed that it will see numerous new faces and is expected to work hard, but, he said, it would be right to comment on the activities of the new National Assembly at least one year later.

“We may not have a team mastering all the subtleties of the parliamentary work, but the most important thing is whether the new parliament will have a desire to learn or not,” he said.

Poghosyan, who heads the International Center for Human Development, found it hard to name the force that is likely to assume the role of opposition in the parliament, adding it will become clear during the debates of specific issues.

Separately, the analyst called for a unity in the Artsakh issue to have a decided settlement to the conflict. “I believe we should not hurry up and be discouraged because Azerbaijan is trying to push ahead its own interests,” he said.

Commenting on the recent statement of Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan according to which Armenia is ready to build relations with Turkey without preconditions, he said: “I believe that one day Turkey will have authorities that will recognize the Armenian genocide and will realize that they cannot avoid responsibility. Time will come when Turkey will open the borders without preconditions. The moment when Turkey realizes that it will have to spend huge sums on having the Genocide denied, I am convinced, it will recognize it,” he said.

Sunday’s elections saw Pashinyan’s My Step bloc win a landslide victory with over 70 percent of the vote. The Prosperous Armenia and Bright Armenia parties have also made it to the parliament with 8.27% and 6.37% of the vote, respectively.
