Group of residents protest demolition of Yerevan building
At the initiative of President of the Civil Consciousness NGO Narek Samsonyan, a group of citizens staged a protest against the demolition of a building on 13 Khorenatsi Street in Yerevan, Armenia’s capital.
Holding posters reading ‘Vandalism’ that featured photos of Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan and Chief Architect Arthur Meschian, the protesting crowed marched to the demolished building from the Republic Square.
Speaking to reporters, Samsonyan stressed the building was an interesting sample of cultural heritage worthy of being listed among cultural monuments and could have been renovated and saved.
“Mr. Marutyan, this building has not been destroyed by the former authorities. It’s you who has demolished it and will continue to demolish numerous other buildings, saying the former authorities granted a permission,” he said.
The activist threated tougher measures against what he called ‘an act of vandalism’ in the Armenian capital.
