Georgian activists continue protesting against Azerbaijani decision to obstruct access to the ancient monastery complex
A conflict between Georgian activists and Azerbaijani border guards continues around the ancient monastery complex in the mountains on an undivided stretch of the border between Georgia and Azerbaijan.
A marching with participation of church persons and public groups “Davit Gareja is Georgia and Caucasus is Our House” is being held at the monastery complex. As Jam news reports, the reason for the new protests of Georgian activists in David Gareji was the construction of a new road near the complex on the Azerbaijani side.
Georgia says the work continued until May 25, and this was confirmed by footage captured by a drone deployed by Georgian activists.
To note, David Gareji has long been the subject of discussion between the two countries, since the border in this region is not divided. A bilateral Georgian-Azerbaijani intergovernmental commission on the delimitation and demarcation of the state border was created in 1996, but since then the process has not progressed at all.
