‘Broken promises, poor staff policy’: Opposition lawmaker urges authorities to be more ‘collaborative’

Edmon Marukyan, the head of the Bright Armenia opposition faction in the parliament, described the debates on the execution of the 2018 state budget as ‘extraordinary’ at a National Assembly session on Thursday.

“On one hand we know that it’s about an important document and the opposition must have a say in the matter, on the other hand we are discussing a report on the budget execution which the prime minister himself voted against,” he explained.

“We are facing an interesting challenge. The fact that we supported the budget execution before November prevents us from opposing to a report on it. Meantime, we voted against the adoption of that budget,” the lawmaker said.

He stressed the need to voice the existing issues that need solutions so that they don’t repeat themselves in the future. Marukyan named the authorities’ poor staff policy, division of ‘blacks and white’ among the society and the ‘broken promises’ as the three key issues.

“We have repeatedly stated and continue to state that there were promises by the opposition, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, that failed to be fulfilled,” the MP stressed.

“Attempts should be made to stay above everything else and adopt inclusive approaches, becoming everyone’s prime minister and government. We have harshly criticized the well-known policy of ‘whites and blacks’ recently restated by the Yerevan mayor,” Marukyan said.

According to the lawmaker, the government could have achieved better results if the authorities were more cooperative and listened to the opposition criticism.

Meantime, the MP unveiled his faction’s readiness to fully support any good initiative. “Our intellectual, cadre potential is enough to generate approaches that can bring about real changes. It is only necessary to be more collaborative, inclusive, to stop categorizing people and to be the representative of all,” he said, stressing the need to step up the important reforms.

Summing up, Marukyan said Bright Armenia will back the 2018 state budget execution report taking into account the ‘extraordinary’ circumstances.
