Bulgarian FM in Yerevan: Peace talks only way to resolve frozen conflicts
Bulgaria has very good relations both with Azerbaijan and Armenia and stability, prosperity and the settlement of frozen conflicts in the South Caucasus region are among the top priorities of the European Union, Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister, Deputy Prime Minister Ekaterina Zakharieva told a news conference in Yerevan.
Her remarks came in response to a question about whether Bulgaria is expected to change its position on the Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) conflict when it receives supplies of Azerbaijani gas next year.
The Bulgarian official believes frozen conflicts can be settled only through peace talks, mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs in case of the Karabakh conflict.
“There are many frozen conflicts in the region and, as you have already said (referring to Zohrab Mnatsakanyan), this is a security issue for your citizens and it is the first item on the agenda,” Zakharieva said.
“It would be great if we could resolve them through peace dialogue, negotiations so that it no longer limits your economic development. Our position is there is no alternative to peace talks with the support of the Minsk Group co-chairs and the European Union. You know that we have a special approach to the South Caucasus,” she noted.
