Ukrainian plane crash victims' relatives demand answers

Friends and relatives of the victims of a deadly plane crash on the outskirts of Tehran were in mourning on Thursday as they demanded answers on what went wrong, Deutsche Welle reported.

The Boeing 737-800 aircraft, bound for Kyiv, disappeared from radar early Wednesday, minutes after takeoff from Imam Khomeini airport, Tehran's main international airport.

The victims in the crash included 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukrainians - including all of the crew, 10 Swedish, four Afghan and three British nationals. Three Germans were also reported to be among the crash victims, however Germany's Foreign Ministry later said there were no German victims.

The crash came hours after Iran's Revolutionary Guards  launched a ballistic missile attack on US military bases in Iraq, but Iranian officials said they suspected a technical failure brought down the three-and-a-half-year-old Boeing 737-800.

While information about the crash remained limited, US intelligence officials said there was no immediate evidence the jet was shot down, according to the Associated Press.

The second-deadliest aviation tragedy in Canadian history, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau vowed his administration will seek answers and push to be a part of the Iranian-led probe.

"Canadians have questions and they deserve answers," Trudeau said. A collaborative investigation into the crash might prove difficult as Canada closed its embassy in Iran 2012 and severed diplomatic ties with the country.

The 138 passengers on the flight were en route to Canada. Many included international students who were studying at universities throughout Canada. Newlyweds, their bridal party and a family of four were also on the flight.

Addressing the victims' families, Trudeau said: "Know that all Canadians are grieving with you."
