Armenia’s third President and Chairman of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) Serzh Sargsyan will take part in the opposition rally to be held in Yerevan on Tuesday evening, RPA Deputy Chairman Armen Ashotyan told a news conference.

The rally in support of Artsakh and Armenia, which has been organized by the parliamentary opposition factions and the parties comprising them, will kick off in the Liberty Square at 6:30pm.

“Serzh Sargsyan will participate in today’s rally not only as the leader of one of the political forces that initiated the rally, as Armenia's former president or a person who has made an invaluable contribution to achieving and defending the independence of the two Armenian states, but also as an ordinary citizen concerned about the current situation, who cannot sit idly by at home, seeing what is happening around the two Armenian states,” Ashotyan said.

He also explained why the former president opted out of attending the previous opposition rallies,

“Imagine how critical the situation is that President Serzh Sargsyan decided not only to initiate a struggle against the incumbent authorities and in support of Artsakh, but also to personally participate in the planned rally. Such a critical situation last emerged when the three former presidents, Levon Ter-Petrosyan, Robert Kocharyan and Serzh Sargsyan, met," Ashotyan said, adding at the same time Sargsyan will not deliver a speech at the rally.

The politician states the rally is not aimed at furthering the interests of any political force, saying all parties and blocs are only involved in the process of organizing it.

“They are just creating the necessary conditions for society to regain vigilance, dignity and pride, and to rally around our common national agenda,” Ashotyan said, adding the rally is also aimed at sending a clear message to the international community.
