Opposition calls rally in central Yerevan on Monday evening
Opposition leader and deputy parliament speaker Ishkhan Saghatelyan urged supporters to gather at Yerevan’s central France Square for another rally on Monday evening.
The demonstration demanding Nikol Pashinya’s resignation is scheduled to start at 7pm.
In a public post on Facebook late on Sunday, Saghatelyan said more than 2,100 people had been taken to police stations during daily anti-government protests.
“Since April 25, 48 dignified citizens have been detained. 24 of them have placed under arrest. At the moment, courts are hearing motions to arrest others,” he said, stressing the charges pressed against the opposition activists are baseless.
He claims that there are about 50 political prisoners in Armenia, including those who were arrested before the protest movement began.
“Meanwhile, the social media and news sites are flooded with footage showing police brutality against protesters. Nevertheless, no police officer has been held to account for these crimes to date,” the opposition leader said.
“Let’s gather at France Square at 7pm tomorrow. We must show who the real masters of Armenia are. We must show what the real values of Armenia are. We must make it clear what kind of country we want to live in," Saghatelyan noted.
