Political analyst reflects on Pelosi's planned visit to Armenia

Political analyst Suren Sargsyan has reflected on U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s upcoming visit to Armenia.

Pelosi plans to travel to Armenia this weekend “in a show of support for the country, which has been locked in a deadly fight with Azerbaijan”, POLITICO reported on Thursday, citing two people familiar with the visit.

The politician will visit Armenia after traveling to Berlin to attend the G-7 Speakers Summit.

“Pelosi is one of the most influential American politicians, a teammate of President Biden. The visit has been initiated by Pelosi herself,” Sargsyan wrote on Facebook on Friday, highlighting that the trip is not regional.

“Some U.S. media reports suggest that Pelosi is going to help her party win the election in November and then take up another job (serving as an ambassador).

“Naturally, the Democrats need to grab the votes of Armenians for the November elections. However, we should keep in mind that Pelosi is one of the best friends of Armenians in Congress, and her Armenia trip also has a personal motive (especially before her possible resignation).

“Most importantly, when the influential politician made the decision to visit Armenia, Azerbaijan had not yet launched aggression against Armenia. She could have cancelled or postponed the visit, or announced plans to visit Baku as well to maintain parity. Recently, there was also a scandal in the U.S. involving her husband.

“Despite the war and domestic political processes, Pelosi decided to visit Armenia, and we should use this to our advantage (if we are capable of doing so),” the analyst said.
