'Important, albeit belated, step': Chalabyan reacts to reports of Indian arms supplies to Armenia

Public figure and opposition activist Avetik Chalabyan has touched on media reports that India has signed a $250 million deal to export arms and ammunition to Armenia.

According to The Economic Times, India will supply missiles, rockets and ammunition, including indigenous Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launchers, to Armenia over the coming months.

The Pinaka rocket system has been developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and is manufactured by Indian private firms.

The rocket system, which is currently in service with the Indian army, can fire a salvo of 12 rockets within 40 seconds.

“This deal is important not only for replenishing the badly damaged armament of the Armenian army, but also for diversifying the geography of arms supplies to Armenia and is an important step towards forming a new strategic alliance,” Chalabyan wrote on Facebook on Thursday.

“Welcoming this important, albeit very belated, step to re-equip the army, I hope that the army leadership will effectively use this and previously purchased modern weapons (Smerch, Iskander missiles, SU-30 fighters) to hit back the enemy thugs invading the territory of Armenia in the near future,” he said.
