The Armenian authorities have proposed to cede control over the road in Syunik Province to a third country in response to Azerbaijan’s demand that Armenia provide a land corridor to Nathichevan passing through it, South Caucasus geopolitics expert Anzhela Elibegova says.

“A few weeks ago, the authorities claimed that the “Zangezur Corridor" demand was removed from the enemy's narrative and the negotiations. Experts refuted these claims immediately, as the enemy not only continues to insist on the opening of the "Zangezour Corridor", but has also increased its territorial claims to Armenia,” she wrote on Facebook on Saturday.

“During the last press conference of Nikol {Pashinyan], it became clear that not only the talks continue but also various proposals are made.

“Incidentally, under the 9 November 2020 document, all communications must be unblocked. This means that passport and customs control should be carried out by the Republic of Armenia. Azerbaijan opposes it, demanding that either there should be no Armenian control over the road or an Azerbaijani checkpoint should be set up in the Lachin corridor. This has absolutely nothing to do with the document of November 9 and has been laid out later.

“As a result, the Armenian authorities have proposed to cede control over the Syunik road to a third country. Now, if Azerbaijan agrees to it, it will essentially achieve its goal as their movement through our territory will be out of our control.

“So, one day we may find out that weapons are being delivered uncontrollably through our territory to Nakhichevan to attack us,” the expert stated.
