MPs banned from visiting Armen Ashotyan in prison, deputy says
MP Tigran Abrahamyan of the opposition Pativ Unem faction has denounced the Armenian authorities for the crackdown on opposition politician Armen Ashotyan.
The Anti-Corruption Court in Yerevan extended by two months the pre-trial arrest of the politician on Monday night.
Ashotyan, the deputy head of the former ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), was arrested on 16 June on charges of abuse of power and money laundering strongly denied by him as politically motivated.
In a social media post on Tuesday, Abrahamyan said that Ashotyan’s meetings with his family members were restricted.
“Even MPs have been banned from visiting him,” he wrote, adding the politician is in solitary confinement.
“Freedom to Armen Ashotyan! Freedom to all political prisoners!” Abrahamyan added.
