Opposition MP: Tensions around Armenia, Artsakh nearing their peak

The military and political tensions around Armenia and Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) are nearing their peak, opposition MP Tigran Abrahamyan warns, adding they will either escalate into hostilities or gradually abate.

His comments come amid Azerbaijan’s massive military buildup along the border with Armenia and the Artsakh contact line.

“Azerbaijan has sharply toughened its political rhetoric,” Abrahamyan, secretary of the opposition Pativ Unem faction, wrote on Facebook on Friday.

“No matter how much they claim that there is agreement on 70% of the issues in the Armenia-Azerbaijan negotiations, it does not mean that there is a possibility to resolve the situation peacefully or in line with Armenia's interests.

“If Azerbaijan does not change its maximalist position, it will lead either to war or to colossal concessions on the part of Armenia,” the MP charged.
