Arrest of fallen soldier's father sparks protest in Yerevan
The arrest of Garik Galeyan, whose soldier son Mkhitar was killed in the 2020 Artsakh war, sparked a protest in Yerevan on Saturday.
Galeyan was taken into police custody on Friday on suspicion of illegal drug acquisition, possession and sale. He is a member of the Call of Sons NGO critical of the Armenian government.
Despite the rainy weather, many people, including opposition figures, gathered outside the Shengavit District Court of General Jurisdiction in Yerevan in a show of support for the man as the court began hearing a motion to keep him in pre-trial custody.
Opposition Pativ Unem faction MP Tigran Abrahamyan blasted the Armenian authorities for the arrest of the fallen soldier’s father as he spoke to reporters outside the court building.
“The authorities stop at nothing in their attempts to suspend public or political activity,” the MP said, calling Galeyan’s arrest political persecution.
"I believe the arrest won’t affect the further activity of Garik, his like-minded fiends and their organization," he added.
