Political analyst comments on Blinken-Aliyev phone call
Political analyst Suren Surenyants has commented on the statement following Wednesday’s phone talks between U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev
"In brief, yesterday's phone call between the U.S. secretary and the Azerbaijani president made it clear that Blinken assured Aliyev the Armenia-EU-US trilateral meeting slated for April 5 is not aimed against Baku. However, even without this call it’s clear to everyone that the West cannot and will never be Armenia's ally against Azerbaijan,” he posted on Facebook on Thursday.
“Aliyev understands it full well and his "concern" does not stem from the fact that Armenia, "becoming stronger” after the 5 April meeting, could create challenges for Azerbaijan, an illusion which only pseudo pro-Westerners can harbor.
“Aliyev understands perfectly well that the April 5 meeting is directed against Russia and Iran, so his main "concern" is to find a way to exploit it in its relations with Moscow and Tehran and to capitalize its growing role in Washington amid the tightening ring around Iran,” Surenyants noted.
