The death toll from the flooding in northern Armenia has risen to four people, Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures Gnel Sanosyan reports.

He told journalists on Monday that the body of one of the missing persons had been found in the disaster zone.

“The death toll currently stands at four,” the minister said.

Hundreds of people were evacuated on Sunday after floods caused by heavy rains hit Armenia’s Lori and Tavush Provinces.

17 bridges and parts of a strategic highway linking Armenia with Georgia were destroyed after the Debed river burst its banks.

"Some of them are small community bridges, but there are at least 5-6 rather large bridges, which will require a lot of effort and time to restore," Sanosyan said, adding that the bridge destruction has cut off communication with a number of settlements.

According to the minister, the Debed river level has started to drop, which will allow pumping water from yards to the river.
