Opposition MP reacts to removal of transport links from Armenian-Azeri peace deal
Opposition lawmaker Tigran Abrahamyan has commented on the removal of a provision concerning the unblocking of regional transport links from the draft peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which was confirmed by the Armenian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.
Elchin Amirbayov, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's senior envoy for special assignments, told RFE/RL that Azerbaijan and Armenia had agreed to take the paragraph out of the peace treaty and to refer it to a later stage.
In a social media post on Thursday, Abrahamyan recalled that while Baku demanded a “corridor” through Armenia as part of the opening of transport links, it would allow Yerevan to break the years of blockade, “but not at the cost of a corridor.”
“Another important question is that Baku says they agreed to it to have the issue of changes to Armenia’s constitution, a key priority for them, resolved in the shortest possible timeframe,” the MP wrote, adding the details of talks on the matter were not revealed.
“The border adjustment remains a fundamental issue which Azerbaijan has been working on over the past four years, snatching Armenian territories through aggression and blackmail,” Abrahamyan added.
