Political analyst: Pashinyan has failed peace agenda
Political analyst Suren Surenyants has reacted to the removal of a provision concerning the unblocking of regional transport links from the draft peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which was confirmed by the Armenian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.
Elchin Amirbayov, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's senior envoy for special assignments, told RFE/RL that Azerbaijan and Armenia had agreed to take the paragraph out of the peace treaty and to refer it to a later stage. Meanwhile, he reiterated Azerbaijan’s demand for Armenia to change its constitution.
In a social media post on Thursday, Surenyants recalled that there were several controversial issues in the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process concerning Nagorno-Karabakh, border delimitation and demarcation and the unblocking of regional transport links at the initial stage.
“With Pashinyan’s “assistance”, Aliyev successfully swallowed Artsakh and then forced the sitting Armenian prime minister to "greenwash" Armenia's other "red lines", leaving the issues of delimitation/demarcation and unblocking of communications out of the draft peace treaty,” the analyst said.
"It goes without saying that in the current conditions the peace treaty would in no way solve the problems facing Armenia. It would not even guarantee institutional peace and the lifting of Armenia's blockade.
"Moreover, given that in response to all of Yerevan's concessions, Baku is demanding a change to Armenia’s constitution, it can be stated that Pashinyan has failed the peace agenda. At the same time, I guess he never had such an agenda,” Surenyants added.
