Return of Armenian prisoners not part of peace deal with Azerbaijan, speaker says
The repatriation of Armenian prisoners is not included in the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the Armenian parliament speaker said.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Alen Simonyan highlighted that Russia and Azerbaijan had committed to ensuring the return of prisoners of war, hostages and other detained persons in the November 2020 trilateral statement.
“They’ve now failed to deliver on their commitment. It begs the question whether Russia and Azerbaijan have retracted their signatures from the November 9 document,” the speaker said.
Asked whether Armenia’s possible participation in the 29th annual UN climate conference (COP29) in Baku in November should be made conditional on the release of prisoners, Simonyan underscored that the event inviter was the UN.
“Additionally, we need to understand whether our participation is convenient and whether it will take place in case of the possible conclusion of a peace treaty,” he added.
