Police detain 5 foreigners for vandalizing Yerevan subway cars
Armenian police have provided details regarding an act of vandalism that occurred in the Yerevan subway on Saturday.
"At 9:32pm on February 1, the police were reported that masked men had sprayed paint on the carriages along the ground section of the crossing between the Sasuntsi David and Republic Square stations of the Yerevan Metro. Shortly afterwards, a second report indicated that the same group had begun throwing stones at the train, impeding its movement," the police statement said.
Police officers dispatched to the scene confirmed that the train's "emergency stop" lever had been activated. After the train stopped, a group of men ran up and poured paint on the cars while passengers were aboard.
The offenders were quickly identified. Officers from the Yerevan police department, in cooperation with the National Security Service and the Noyemberyan police department, apprehended five foreign nationals on suspicion of hooliganism as they attempted to flee through the Bagratashen checkpoint into Georgia.
The detainees were transferred to the investigative divisions of the Erebuni and Nubarashen districts in Yerevan.
