Armenia sees rise in cancer incidence, mortality rates
World Cancer Day is observed annually on 4 February to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment.
World Cancer Day is led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to support the goals of the World Cancer Declaration, written in 2008. The primary goal of World Cancer Day is to significantly reduce illness and death caused by cancer and is an opportunity to rally the international community to end the injustice of preventable suffering from cancer. The day is observed by the United Nations.
Cancer incidence and mortality rates have been rising significantly in Armenia. The country ranks third in cancer incidence and first in cancer mortality in Western Asia. Between 1985 and 2023, the incidence rate nearly doubled, increasing from 140.6 to 280.9 cases per 100,000 people, while the mortality rate grew 1.7 times, from 98.3 to 170.5 per 100,000. In 2023, cancer was the second leading cause of death in Armenia, accounting for 20.8% of all fatalities.
