Armenia's Central Electoral Commission (CEC) is set to resume a special session today to consider a request by prosecutors to strip Narek Karapetyan, a senior member of the Strong Armenia party, of his parliamentary immunity, following a postponement of the proceedings.

The request was submitted after the June 7 parliamentary elections, in which the opposition Strong Armenia alliance finished second.

Speaking to reporters after Tuesday's session, lawyer Aram Vardevanyan, a representative of the Strong Armenia alliance, said the commission had reached the stage where its members were to deliberate privately before deciding whether to authorize criminal prosecution against Karapetyan.

"The motion is, in fact, based on allegations attributed to our colleague Alik Aleksanyan," Vardevanyan said. "The case file contained about one to one-and-a-half volumes of materials. Some of the documents were illegible, while others had no connection to reality."

The CEC is expected to announce a decision after completing its deliberations.
