Armenian singer defends Tsarukyan after detention

Famous Armenian singer Nersik Ispiryan has spoken out in defense of detained businessman and politician Gagik Tsarukyan, saying the opposition leader’s contributions to the country make the criticism against him unjust.

“As an artist, I prefer to leave political judgments to politicians, but I have had the honor of knowing the Tsarukyan family personally,” Ispiryan told reporters.

Tsarukyan, the leader of the Prosperous Armenia Party, was recently detained on charges of large-scale money laundering and fraud. His arrest has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders and public figures who argue the case is politically motivated.

Ispiryan said Tsarukyan could have chosen to build a comfortable life abroad but instead invested in Armenia. “Rather than recognition, he has received revenge. This kind of treatment only benefits our enemies and gives them reason to speak against us. Gagik Tsarukyan never deserved such treatment,” he said.

The singer praised Tsarukyan’s role in creating jobs, supporting sports, and sponsoring artists. “I consider this situation senseless,” Ispiryan added.
