A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Japan
A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Vanuatu on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said in a bulletin on its website.
There was no widespread tsunami threat, but earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunami that can be destructive along the coasts within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake center, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin. It urged authorities in the region of the epicenter to be aware of this possibility and take appropriate action.
There was no immediate report of casualties or damage.
