TURKISH’ ECONOMIC EXPECTATIONS OF OPENING ARMENIAN-TURKISH BORDER
Turkish “Hurriyet” makes observations on the possible impact that the normalization of ties between Armenia and Turkey can have on the economies of both states. Turkish magazine held interview with Kaan Soyak, co-chairman of the Turkish-Armenian Business Development Council, asking to make some observations in this respect.
“The volume of trade circulation between Armenia and Turkey currently forms $150mln. Within a short time frame that index can be doubled up to $300mln. And in three years it is expected the index of trade circulation will reach $1billion,” Turkish co-chair said emphasizing that opening of the borders will reinforce trade and contribute to the development of the Eastern parts of the country, particularly, Kars’ development.
Kaan Soyak thinks the soonest economic development will be recorded in tourism. “Akhtamar Island in Van, ruins of Ani and Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin in Armenia are the preferable places to be visited by 7 million Armenians living in Unites States, France, Canada, Lebanon and other countries. There is no similar guarantee for tourism development elsewhere,” co-chair said.
The co-chair pays attention on the fact that in the aftermath of normalization of Armenian-Turkish ties and opening of the borders Kars-Gyumri railroad will be released which will make changes in logistic systems of countries of Middle East, Russia and West.
“In the forthcoming 50 years when energetic maps are being drafted, Turkey’s rapprochement with Armenia is of great significance. That rapprochement will recommend more reliable and alternative ways in Caucasus,” Soyak said.
