Economy of Azerbaijan: increase in external debt, reduction of production and export of oil and gas

Since the beginning of 2014 in Azerbaijan grew by 5% external debt decreased by 9%, foreign trade turnover, the crude oil exports ($ 13.1 billion) decreased by 2.2%, natural gas (225 million) - 57%, production volume in the oil sector declined by 2.4%, reports the Azerbaijani news agency Turan.

According to the Ministry of Finance of Azerbaijan as of July 1, 2014 public external debt of the Republic of Azerbaijan is 4 billion 987,900,000 manat (6,35 billion dollars) at a ratio of 8.5% of GDP. For each inhabitant of the country there is 523.44 manat (667 dollars) of external debt. Earlier this year, the figure was 21.90 manat (28 dollars) below.

The Ministry of Finance of Azerbaijan notes that 62% of the external debt is borrowed for a period of 10 to 20 years, 30.3% - more than 20 years, the remaining 7.7% - up to 10 years.

As Turan notes, the external debt of the country's growing every year. On 1 January 2013 the external debt amounted to 4 billion 481,100,000 manat, January 1, 2012 - 3 billion 788.3 million manats, January 1, 2011 - $ 3 billion 857.3 million., and January 1 2008 - $ 2 billion 441.9 million.

According to data released on September 16 by the State Customs Committee (SCC), during the first 8 months of this year, the volume of foreign trade turnover amounted to about $ 21 billion, which is 9.2% less than in the comparable period of 2013.

Volumes of exports from Azerbaijan ($ 15 351 million) decreased by 3.7%. Crude oil exports ($ 13.1 billion) decreased by 2.2%, natural gas (225 million) - 57%. Exports of petroleum products with the refilled aircraft of foreign airlines in Azerbaijan amounted to $ 867 million, which is 4.5% more than in the comparable period of 2013. The hydrocarbon feedstock and its products in the export structure of the country, last year amounted to 92.65%.

The volume of imports of goods amounted to $ 5,613.5 million, a decrease of 21.3%. Approximately $ 0.5 billion decreased supply of vehicles, ferrous metals supplies decreased $ 230 million and timber supplies decreased $ 138 million.

Independent experts say that in many cases the trade turnover between Azerbaijan and a number of countries does not correspond to the data of the customs authorities of the contracting parties. Recent example of this was the statement by the Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin. According to him, the first seven months of this year, trade between the two countries amounted to $ 2.2 billion, while the official statistics of Azerbaijan claims about the level of these bonds in the amount of $ 1 billion.

Industrial enterprises of Azerbaijan, including entrepreneurs without legal entity status, in January - August produced goods worth 22.6 billion manat (minus 1.2% for September 1 last year). The State Statistics Committee notes that almost three quarters (72.1% or 16.2 billion AZN) products accounted for mineral extraction at 28.6 million tons of oil and 12.3 billion cubic meters of gas.

In the field of processing of products there was produced 5 billion manat, where the greatest growth (+ 78.9%) was recorded in the jewelry business and the production of musical instruments, sports and medical equipments. Growth of tobacco products was 75%.

Production in the non-oil sector grew by 5.4% and that in the oil sector fell by 2.4%.
