“The great powers trying to solve some problems with Turkey manipulate and exploit the issue of the Armenian Genocide. Regardless of our will, the Armenian Genocide is being recognized. In such circumstances we should make sure [their] interests coincide with our national interests,” Head of the Department for the History of the Armenian Cause and Armenian Genocide at the National Academy of Sciences, Armen Marukyan said during a press conference.

Speaking about the Bundestag resolution, Marukyan noted that there is a positive change in the resolution of 2016, compared to that of 2005. Particularly, the word ‘genocide’ is used in the resolution.

“But there are also ambiguous formulations, which may result in arbitrary interpretations,” Marukyan noted.

He also said that reviving the Armenian-Turkish protocols, reconciliation of the two nations are also mentioned in the resolution.

“Germany, a country that recognized the Holocaust and has been compensating for its crime under the Luxembourg Agreement since 1952, doesn’t even mention that Turkey, responsible for a similar crime has compensate. The idea of compensation is completely missing from the resolution,” Marukyan said.

“The Armenian side had no influence on the making of the resolution. This goes to show that as long as we don’t work on the preparatory documents of such resolutions, they will never be in the interests of the Armenian side,” he noted.

According to Armen, Marukyan, the circle around Turkey keeps tightening. The relationships between Turkey and other countries keep getting worse. He noted that it depends on Armenia whether or not to use this situation in its own interests.
