Importance of prison monitoring group activities highlighted during Human Rights Watch and Armenian Ombudsman meeting
Ombudsman of Armenia, Aram Tatoyan met with Human Rights Watch advocacy director for Europe and Central Asia, Philippe Dam in Geneva.
According to the administration of the ombudsman, during the meeting the parties highlighted the importance of implementation of active preventive activities by the Ombudsman for the introduction of international standards of human rights in Armenia.
Particularly, the issue concerning the Ombudsman’s role as a national preventive mechanism in the fight against torture and other cases of inhuman treatment was highlighted. The parties also attached importance to the Prison Monitoring Group and their visits to penitentiaries.
The cooperation between the civil society and media was also highlighted during the meeting.
The parties also discussed issues related to domestic violence and its prevention, particularly the adoption of joint legislation, as well as protection of rights of disabled persons, etc.
According to the source, the parties agreed to cooperate actively through organizing joint events, providing the participation of the representatives of the parties, carrying out joint research towards human rights protection and introducing proposals on elimination of violations.
