Deployment of a Turkish military base in Azerbaijan not realistic, political scientist says
“The possibility for deployment of a Turkish military base in the territory of Azerbaijan is not realistic at present, and there are even no prerequisites to admit such a development in the foreseeable future,” Deputy Head of the Caucasus Institute Sergey Minasyan told Panorama.am, adding any step in that direction by Turkey may result in creating problems with Russia.
“No matter how much the Turkish-Russian relations prosper, they may not cross certain lines. Additionally, deployment of a military base could generate problems not only with Russia. Turkey’s relations are strained with the European Union as well,” Minasyan reminded.
He next pointed that another regional power, Iran, will as well oppose to the idea of a Turkish military base in the region.
As to the NATO, the organization is not inspired by the Turkish military presence in the region alike. “Turkish-Azerbaijani military exercises are a mere message telling Turkey is standing by its younger brother,” Minasyan said.
To remind, Turkey and Azerbaijan launched joint military exercises lasting from May 1 to May 5 with about 1,000 troops participating. As Baku defense officials stated the drills are aimed at testing military equipment and practicing coordination between the two armies.
