Iran’s Ali Larijani re-elected as parliament speaker
Iranian lawmakers on Wednesday overwhelmingly voted to re-elect Ali Larijani as parliament speaker for the second year of the 10th Parliament, MEHR Iranian news agency reports.
Larijani won 204 out of 268 votes cast during the open session of the Parliament (Majlis) on Wednesday. He won the post while running against no contestant.
Pursuant to Article 66 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the voting process of the Parliament speaker and the governing council is determined by its internal rules of procedure, according to which the elections of the parliament speaker are held annually.
According to the Results of the Iranian parliamentary elections held on February 26 2016, three political forces running for the elections – Reformists, Conservatives and Independent candidates – captured 117, 94 and 74 seats respectively. The representatives of religious minorities gained 5 mandates.
