French president, Paris mayor pay homage to Arsene Tchakarian
French President Emmanuel Macron and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo have offered condolences over the demise of Arsene Tchakarian, the last surviving member of Missak Manouchian group of immigrant workers courageously resisting the Nazi occupation of France during World War II.
Macron tweeted that Tchakarian, an ethnic Armenian, was "a true hero of the Resistance and tireless witness whose voice resonated strongly until the end.”
Hidalgo also took to Twitter to pay tribute to Tchakarian, writing: “We remember his name, his brothers and sisters of struggle, and their fight. They honored France.”
Arsene Tchakarian died on Saturday at a hospital near his home in the Paris suburb of Vitry-sur-Seine at the age of 101.
