President on Yerevan elections: New Armenia makes 'first step' towards improving electoral processes
President Armen Sarkissian of Armenia has issued a message on the 23 September elections to the Yerevan City Council, praising it as Armenia’s 'first step' towards the improvement of electoral processes.
The message, released by the presidential press service, reads:
“Dear Fellow Citizens,
The Central Electoral Commission has recapped the final results of the Yerevan City Council elections.
I congratulate us all on conducting the elections in accordance with constitutional norms and principles.
This is the first step of New Armenia on the road towards a fundamental improvement of electoral processes, which in turn might create an atmosphere of a greater public trust for the next elections. With this regard, I highly value the stance of the competing political alliances and parties and that of the political forces which did not participate in the elections and accepted the results of the elections and congratulated the winning force.
The high percentage of votes places a great responsibility on the leadership of My Step bloc, particularly on the future Mayor of Yerevan. The Prosperous Armenia Party and Luys bloc are also expected to work hard in the Council to ensure balance and diversity of opinions.
I wish the new leadership of Yerevan productive work for making our capital even more beautiful and for the prosperity of its residents.”
The Central Electoral Commission on Sunday summed up the final outcomes of the snap municipal elections, according to which My Step bloc will have 57 seats, the Prosperous Armenia Party – 5 seats, and Luys (Light) alliance – 3 seats in the Yerevan City Council.
