Armenian parliament elects deputy speakers
The new Armenian National Assembly elected three deputy speakers in a secret vote during its session on Tuesday. 130 out of 132 lawmakers took part in the voting.
Based on the results, Alen Simonyan from the ruling My Step faction have been elected Deputy Speaker in a vote of 109 in favor and 20 against, with one ballot paper declared invalid.
Another ruling faction candidate Lena Nazaryan was elected to the post with 124 votes for and only 3 against, Chairman of the Counting Commission Vahagn Hovakimyan said, summing up the voting outcomes.
Lawmakers confirmed the opposition Prosperous Armenia Party MP Vahe Enfiajyan’s candidacy to the post of deputy speaker with 108 votes for and 3 against.
Mane Tandilyan from the Bright Armenia faction, the other opposition candidate vying for the position, received only 19 votes in favor.
During Monday’s inaugural session, lawmakers confirmed Ararat Mirzoyan as Speaker.
Under the Armenian law, the National Assembly elects a speaker and three deputy speakers. The opposition is entitled to fill the position of one of three deputy speakers. They are elected and withdrawn by a majority vote of the total number of lawmakers.
