Young Republicans protesting outside EU Office in Yerevan
A group of young members of the former ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) is staging a protest outside the European Union Office in Yerevan, urging the latter to react to the controversial constitutional amendments passed by the ruling majority last Monday.
Chairman of the RPA Youth Organization Hayk Mamijanyan told reporters that around 100 members have signed letters to be delivered not only to the EU, but also to the embassies of the OSCE participating states accredited in Armenia and the UN and Council of Europe Delegations.
“The letter addresses the legal and political permissiveness taking place in Armenia with regard to the Constitutional Court. It offers an explanation from the political and legal point of view of all the ongoing anti-constitutional and anti-democratic processes in Armenia,” he said.
According to Mamijanyan, the EU ambassador in Armenia, with her “biased speech and often biased silence” gives the impression that European structures are in favor or are silent about those developments, whereas the Venice Commission, Council of Europe and European People's Party have already deplored the constitutional changes.
“The state of emergency remains in place for the single purpose to prevent such actions,” he said, stating all protesters are wearing face masks and practicing social distancing as much as possible.
“This rally is aimed at making the incumbent authorities realize that they cannot do whatever they want. Sooner or later, the authorities will suffer defeats both on the domestic and international platforms to understand that they are not allowed to do anything," Mamijanyan stressed.
