Saghatelyan: Draft constitutional amendments change attitude to political minority
The system of government enshrined in the Constitution currently in force provides no opportunities for the development of society, President of Armenian Public Relations Association (APRA) Arman Saghatelyan said today during ‘Yes and No’ reality show while campaigning in the village of Yereskhavan in Armenia’s Ararat Province ahead of the December 6 referendum on the constitutional reform.
“Under the Constitution currently in force, the political force that wins an election gets everything, while the force that has been defeated receives nothing. The defeated political force can do nothing with the votes it gained in the election so as to protect the interests of its voters because the winner takes everything into his hands and start making decisions for everyone,” Saghatelyan said.
As a member of Yes Team supporting the constitutional reform in the country, Arman Saghatelyan also said: “The draft amendments to the Constitution of Armenia promise development. The document proposes what is done around the world – to have one elected body – the parliament. Moreover, it is proposed removing the majoritarian electoral system. Besides, the draft proposes reconsidering the approaches to political minorities and taking decisions of great importance to the country not by a simple majority, but by a three fifths of the votes”.
