Protests erupt in Baku demanding to remove sidings from buildings following dreadful fire

The residents of the apartment buildings faced with flammable materials rose up for protest following a fire in a 16-storey building which caused 15 people’s death, according to confirmed data, Azerbaijani news portal Haqqin.az reports, citing the newspaper Yeni Musavat.

According to the information, about 50 residents of an apartment block paralyzed the construction works of facing their house with flammable materials in Khatain district, Baku. “Emergency Situations Ministry representatives arrived at the scene and tried to calm down the residents of the house, promising them to remove the siding from the building in near future. However, once the Emergency Situations Ministry representatives left the territory, the workers went on to install the siding. About 2,000 residents of the district collected signatures and presented them to Baku executives with the demand to remove the siding from all the buildings in Khatain district,” the publication reads.

Haqqin.az adds that according to the Health Ministry, those injured as a result of the fire in Baku were mainly poisoned by the incomplete combustion products. According to the Ministry report, carboxyhemoglobin was found in the blood of those affected by the carbon monoxide poisoning of moderate and severe degree.

The portal writes that the fire was dreadful, especially ahead of the European Games, when so much effort has been made and all the precaution measure taken up to the details. “And here you have the punishment. The most important thing has been overseen. There are living people beyond the empty embellishment and ostentation. The deaths and injuries cannot be undone. Now the most important thing is not even only the punishment of those guilty of this tragedy (though, clearly, it is vital and must be extremely severe). The most important thing is the conclusions. The conclusions are not just private, practical, and referring just to construction and engineering. Everything is clear here. Moreover, it was clear even earlier, before the tragedy,” the article reads.

As the article has it, the ostentation should be ceased. “It cost us a lot not only materially, but also morally, calling the annoyance of the society and the astonishment (and sometimes even the laughter) of the Western tourists who are used to simplicity, modesty and thriftiness. So who is to blame for what happened? I think, not only the head of the company that has already been held responsible for the flammable siding of the burnt apartment building, but also those standing behind the undertaking itself and committed to skillfully please, strikingly stand out and show off. So, gentlemen, subservience, grovelling, ostentation are not only low, deserving condemnation and disgusting, but can also be – as in this case – flatly criminal,” the author writes.

Report.az writes that one of those killed during the fire in the apartment building in Binagadin district, Baku was European Games 2015 volunteer, according to the Operations Committee of the first European Games in Baku 2015. “21-years-old Eyvazova Ulkyar Khamir gyzy was killed with her 16-year-old brother Eyvazov Davud Khamir ogli and 43-year-old mother, Shirinova Zulfiya Yaver gyzy,” the article reads.

Fire erupted in a multi-story building in Azadlig Avenue, 289, Baku on May 19. According to the information, the plastic cover of the building burnt down. The workers of the Fire Service of the Emergency Situations Ministry of Azerbaijan arrived at the scene. They managed to localize the fire. This is already the second case in one month that fire quickly spreads during the inferno because of the inflammable building materials.
