German magazine: Armenian media, unlike Azerbaijani ones, show moderateness covering Karabakh conflict

In a satirical animation movie KillDim, which came as an answer to anti-Armenian propaganda circulated by official Azerbaijan, it is shown how the Azerbaijanis destroyed an ancient Armenian cemetery in Nakhijevan, and how Azerbaijani officer RamilSafarovaxe-murdered sleeping Armenian officer GurgenMargaryan in Budapest in 2004, where they were taking English courses in the framework of NATO Partnership for Peaceprogram, German Zenith magazine writes.

The satirical cartoon is not broadcast on television. “The Armenian media adhere to a ‘golden rule’ not to insult Azerbaijan’s president IlhamAliyev and his family members,”YerkirMedia TV company’s director GeghamManukyan said adding that the Armenian media try to avoid a further militarization of the Armenian society by this. “We do not want to add fuel to the fire.”

It is noted in the article thatpoliticalanalyst AnzhelaElibegova, the co-author of the book  “Armenophobia in Azerbaijan,” points out the high level of aggression against the Armenians in the Azerbaijani media and even in books for children. According to the political analyst, it is hard to imagine that “the Azerbaijanis’ new generation, which has never seen Armenia and has been brought up amid anti-Armenian propaganda, can live in the same society with the Armenians.” In her opinion, if the media do not show moderateness, there will be a new escalation.

Meanwhile, Intellinews.com writes that after an outbreak of fighting in the Karabakh conflict zone in April, a renewed ceasefire might have brought about a shaky and frequently interrupted lull in the shooting, but a war of words is still very much continuing in the media. It is particularly highlighted that the Azerbaijani media have published materials with aggressive anti-Armenian headlines.

Unbeknownst to them, Hollywood power couple George and Amal Clooney found themselves in the headlines in Azerbaijani and Armenian newspapers this past week as “unsuspecting partisans in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.” The actor and his wife - the human rights lawyer Amal - are no strangers to controversy thanks to their political activism on issues of international interest, like the Armenian Genocide, human rights in the Maldives and, more recently, freedom of speech in Egypt and Azerbaijan. It is noted that with her activities, the Hollywood celebrity Amal Clooney has brought a large spectrum of issues connected to fundamental human rights violations in Egypt and Azerbaijan to the attention of a much broader international public.

"The two have yet to actually take sides in the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, but that hasn't stopped the Azerbaijani media from making it plain where they think their sympathies lie," the website stresses.
Recent “accusations” have appeared in the Azerbaijani media that Amal Clooney is Armenian(her family actually hails from the Druze minority in Lebanon), and there have been even statements that she is “Armenia’s weapon.”The accusations against Amal surfaced as her husband, a supporter of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, travelled to Yerevan on April 24, as the co-chairman of “Aurora Prize” Selection Committee.

Intellinews.com writes that Amal came “under fire” of the Azerbaijani media following an interview she gave with the BBC about human rights in Azerbaijan and the case of jailed Azerbaijani journalist Khadija Ismayilova, who is serving a sentence on trumped-up charges after reporting on the first family’s wealth.

Since Amal announced in January that she would take Ismayilova’s case at the European Court for Human Rights (ECHR), Azerbaijani media have regularly accused her of “pursuing fame by attacking Turkic countries like Azerbaijan and Turkey.” It is reminded that in the past, the lawyer has also represented the Armenian state in trials at the ECHR against Turkish politician DoguPerincek, who had been convicted in Switzerland for denying the Armenian Genocide.

According to the article, to Azerbaijanis, anyone who advocates for the Armenian Genocide is an enemy of the state by default, despite the fact that the event is unrelated to the more recent conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.

Following his wife’s lawsuits at the ECHR in defense of Armenia, George Clooney took on the cause by collaborating with US-based Armenian organization 100 LIVES.

“Aurora Prize” awards ceremony took place in Yerevan on April 24. “Aurora Prize” has been created in the framework of 100 LIVES initiative. The inspiring stories of courage and survival during the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire in 1915 provided the basis for 100 LIVES.

Summing up, the website writes that perhaps the activities of such celebrities like the Clooney couple would help bring causes that are otherwise of limited interest to the international community into the limelight, and rally support in favor of human rights and historical injustices in the Caucasus.
