Armenia sacks army officers over fatal military truck crash
Armenia’s acting Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan has dismissed 4 military officers of one of the Defense Army’s military units after a military vehicle was involved in a tragic accident last week, killing 4 servicemen and injuring 17 others.
The caretaker minister also issued warnings to two army officials, a strict reprimand to two others and a reprimand to one official.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, Defense Ministry spokesman Artsrun Hovhannisyan said these penalties ‘doesn’t relieve anyone of criminal responsibility.’
A KamAz military truck carrying 21 servicemen ran off the Vorotan-Khndzoresk highway at around 1pm on 7 November to roll into the nearby canyon.
The driver of the car, private Edgar Hunanyan and soldiers Hayrapet Nairyan, Hrant Gasparyan and David Melkonyan were killed in the accident, while the other servicemen aboard the truck were rushed to the Military Hospital and Goris Medical Center, with none of them being in a life-threatening condition.
A criminal case has been launched into the accident. A probe is underway.
