Men linked to terror group arrested in Norway, Bulgaria

Two men have been arrested in Norway and Bulgaria respectively for having “expressed support” for Al-Qaida “through “internet-based activities,” Norway’s domestic security agency said Wednesday. One suspect was arrested in Oslo and the other - identified as a Norwegian student - was taken into custody in Bulgaria as part of a coordinated action in the early hours of Tuesday, said Thomas Blom, a prosecutor with the agency, known by its acronym PST. Norwegian media said there is a family connection between the men.

Nursing home fire kills at least two people in Czech Republic

More than 50 people have also been injured in the blaze at the facility for dementia patients near Prague. The fire broke out for an unknown reason on Wednesday at the facility in Roztoky, north of Prague.

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt are expecting their second baby

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt have announced that they are pregnant with "Miracle baby #2." The couple who met and fell in love on MTV's hit "The Hills" which premiered in 2006, shared the news on social media. "My heart is overflowing with joy! I'm excited to share that I am pregnant!" Montag wrote in the caption on her verified Instagram account, which accompanied a picture of her on the cover of Us Weekly with her baby bump. "I have been hoping and praying for this moment for so long!" Montag and Pratt have a 4-year-old son, Gunner Stone.

Israel holds military drills amid Iran tensions

Dozens of Israeli fighter jets conducted exercises over the Mediterranean and warships held Red Sea drills this week, the army said Thursday, as it readies for different "scenarios" against Iran. The two arch enemies have been locked in a shadow war that comes amid tensions over stalled efforts to revive a deal meant to ensure Iran is unable to develop a nuclear weapon. Israel is staunchly opposed to the 2015 nuclear deal and has vowed to do whatever it takes to stop Iran from obtaining a nuclear bomb.

Spain fires captain whose soldiers knelt at Franco memorial

Spain’s armed forces have fired an army captain after a video showed some 30 soldiers of the officer’s unit kneeling in front of the Valley of the Fallen mausoleum, the most potent existing symbol of the dictatorship of the late Gen. Francisco Franco. The Defense Ministry said Thursday that the captain was dismissed within hours of the video being posted on social media and that an investigation into the incident would be completed within 48 hours.

Dogs can detect Covid with high accuracy, even asymptomatic cases

A study published Wednesday in the journal Plos One offers further evidence that dogs can indeed be trained to detect Covid. The dogs tested in the research accurately identified 97 percent of positive cases after sniffing human sweat samples. That made them more sensitive than some rapid antigen tests.

Arrests made after Queen Elizabeth's military parade interrupted

At least two people caused a disturbance at a military parade in London which launches celebrations for Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee on Thursday, running out in front of marching soldiers before being arrested, TV pictures showed. Two men ran out from behind barriers where tens of thousands of people had gathered on the Mall boulevard, which leads to Buckingham Palace, and lay down in front of a marching band, footage showed. One of the individuals appeared to hold up a banner, before police dragged away the men, one of whom was wearing a gold crown on his head.

UN peacekeeper killed in Mali 'terrorist' attack

A UN peacekeeper was killed and three others wounded Wednesday in a "terrorist attack" on their convoy in Kidal, northern Mali, the MINUSMA mission said. The casualties were members of the mission's Jordanian contingent, a security official said separately on condition of anonymity.

France to give queen Republican Guard horse for her jubilee

French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday said his country would make a present of a horse to Queen Elizabeth II, to mark the celebrations of her 70 years on the throne. The Elysee said Macron decided to give the queen, a known horse lover, a 7-year-old grey gelding belonging to the largely ceremonial French Republican Guard named Fabuleu de Maucour. It was to be delivered to Windsor Castle Wednesday.

Ancient Mayan maize god sculpture found in Mexico

Archaeologists have uncovered a roughly 1,300-year-old sculpture representing the head of a Mayan maize god in ruins in southeastern Mexico, the National Institute of Anthropology and History said. The artefact was found in Palenque facing east to west, "which would symbolize the birth of the maize plant with the first rays of the sun," it said in a statement Tuesday.

Police say four killed in Oklahoma in new US gun rampage

A man armed with a rifle and handgun opened fire inside a medical building in Oklahoma on Wednesday, killing four people, police said, the latest of a series of mass shootings in the United States. The gunman also died, apparently of a self-inflicted wound, Tulsa’s deputy police chief Eric Dalgleish told reporters outside the St Francis Hospital.

French World Cup winner Pogba to leave Man Utd

French World Cup-winning midfielder Paul Pogba is to leave Manchester United at the end of June, the club said Wednesday, bringing the curtain down on a largely disappointing second spell. The 29-year-old's departure at the end of his contract will see United recoup none of the then record £89 million ($112 million) he cost them when they bought him from Juventus in 2016. He flourished initially under Jose Mourinho and was part of the sides that won the League Cup and Europa League in 2017.

Mexico totally bans sales of e-cigarettes

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador signed a decree Tuesday outlawing the sale of e-cigarettes, continuing the government’s anti-vaping policy. Mexico had already prohibited imports of the devices since at least October. And even before that, consumer protection and other laws had been used to discourage sales. Despite Tuesday’s decree, many Mexicans import or buy vaping cartridges or fluid under the table or online domestically.

Kurt Zouma banned from keeping cats for 5 years for abuse

West Ham defender Kurt Zouma was banned Wednesday from keeping cats for five years and ordered to carry out 180 hours of community service as a punishment for kicking and slapping his pet cat in abuse caught on video. The France international received his sentence after pleading guilty last week to two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal. In footage of the abuse that took place on Feb. 6 and surfaced on social media, the soccer player could be seen kicking his Bengal cat across his kitchen, before throwing a pair of shoes at it and slapping its head.
