France call on citizens to wear masks again in public transport

French people should start wearing masks again in crowded areas, especially in public transport, as France has to deal with a new wave of COVID-19 infections fuelled by new variants of the disease, Health Minister Brigitte Bourguignon said on Monday. "I'm not saying it should be mandatory but I do ask the French people to put the mask on in public transport," she told RTL, adding it was a "civic duty" to do so.

Jordan toxic gas leak kills 11, injures hundreds

A leak of toxic chlorine gas at Jordan's Red Sea port of Aqaba has killed 11 people and injured more than 250 others, state media report. Authorities said a chemical storage container fell while being transported as a result of a crane malfunction. State media said 199 of the injured were being treated at local hospitals for chemical exposure. Some were reportedly in a critical condition.

Residents injured as powerful storm hits southern Dutch city

One person was killed and about 10 injured Monday as a powerful storm ripped through a historic fishing town in the southern Netherlands, tearing the roofs off at least four houses and sending café furniture flying through the streets. Video posted on social media showed a waterspout close to the town.

NASA launches first rocket from Australian space center

NASA has successfully launched a rocket from Australia's remote Northern Territory, making history as the agency's first commercial spaceport launch outside the United States. The rocket is expected to travel more than 300 kilometers into space on its mission to observe the Alpha Centauri A and B constellations -- the nearest star systems to the Earth.

Man dead and five hurt after attacker stabs several people in German asylum seeker shelter

The attacker, reportedly a resident of the shelter, is said to have knocked on the doors of the rooms of the building in Kressbronn, on Lake Constance, on Sunday evening. When residents opened, he stabbed them, dpa reported. Police officers detained a 31-year-old man in front of the asylum-seekers’ shelter.

Long-serving chairman Bruce Buck and director Marina Granovskaia also departed Stamford Bridge last week in the wake of a takeover from American Todd Boehly's consortium. Cech, who won 13 major honours with Chelsea during his playing career as a goalkeeper, became the club's technical and performance advisor when he retired in 2019.

Rare mummified baby woolly mammoth discovered in Canada

Miners in the Klondike gold fields of Canada’s far north have made a rare discovery, digging up the mummified remains of a near-complete baby woolly mammoth. Members of the local Tr’ondek Hwech’in First Nation named the calf Nun cho ga, which means “big baby animal”. Palaeontologist says the baby woolly mammoth is ‘one of the most incredible mummified ice age animals ever discovered in the world’.

Six police die in shootout in northern Mexico

Six police officers were killed and four others wounded Sunday in the northern Mexico border state of Nuevo Leon after they were ambushed by a presumed drug gang equipped with 10 home-made armored cars and heavy weaponry. Nuevo Leon state police said the patrol was outnumbered in the pre-dawn attack on a highway leading to the Colombia border crossing. The force said the officers performed “heroically” in the attack.

Tokyo warned of power crunch as Japan endures heat wave

Japan's government has urged people in the capital and its surrounding area to use less electricity on Monday, as it warned that supplies will be strained as the country faces a heatwave. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry expects demand for power to be "severe" this afternoon local time. It said people should switch off unnecessary lights but still use air conditioning to avoid heatstroke.

Deadly stadium collapse at Colombian bullfight

Four people were killed and hundreds were injured after a stand collapsed during a bullfight in Colombia, local authorities said Sunday. Around 800 spectators were seated in the sections that collapsed, according to authorities in the city of El Espinal. An 18-month-old baby was among those who died.

Pompeii excavation unearths remains of pregnant tortoise

When Mount Vesuvius erupted nearly 2,000 years ago Pompeii's ancient residents were frozen in place by ash. So too it turns out were the city's flora and fauna - including a pregnant tortoise with her egg. Archaeologists found the reptile's remains buried under ash and rock where it had laid undiscovered since 79AD. The 14cm tortoise had burrowed into a tiny underground lair beneath a shop destroyed in that earlier quake.

Earthquake of magnitude 5.6 strikes southern Iran

An earthquake with a 5.6 magnitude struck in Iran’s southern Gulf waters early Saturday morning, state TV reported. There were no immediate reports of fatalities or damage. The quake occurred between the port of Charak and the island of Kish at a depth of 22 km, it said. Officials told state TV that there had been some 100 quakes and aftershocks over the past 10 days in the same region.

‘Deepest shipwreck’: US WWII navy destroyer found off Philippines

The ship has been found nearly 7,000 metres below sea level off the Philippines, making it the world's deepest shipwreck ever located, an American exploration team said. The USS Samuel B Roberts went down during a battle off the central island of Samar on October 25, 1944 as US forces fought to liberate the Philippines -- then a US colony -- from Japanese occupation.
