Beijing now has more billionaires than any city

Beijing is now home to more billionaires than any other city in the world, according to the latest Forbes' annual rich list. The Chinese capital added 33 billionaires last year and now hosts 100, said the business magazine. This narrowly beats New York City, which hosts 99 and has held the top ranking for the last seven years.

One in three survivors of severe Covid diagnosed with mental health condition

One in three people who were severely ill with coronavirus were subsequently diagnosed with a neurological or psychiatric condition within six months of infection, a study has found. The observational research, which is the largest of its kind, used electronic health records of 236,379 patients mostly from the US and found 34% experienced mental health and neurological conditions afterwards. The most common being anxiety, with 17% of people developing this.

Australians under 50 shouldn't get the AstraZeneca vaccine

Australia has advised its citizens under 50 against getting the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine after a link was confirmed between the jab and rare blood clots. Prime Minister Scott Morrison made the announcement on Thursday night after the nation's drug regulators held urgent meetings to consider the findings of a review of the vaccine by European authorities.

Video shows dramatic crew rescue after ship lost power during storm

The crew of a Dutch cargo ship was rescued from their vessel when it lost power in the middle of a storm in the North Sea, putting it in danger of capsizing. Rescue operators plan to tow the empty ship to safety to avoid the hundreds of tons of oil and diesel from spilling into the water.

South Korea ruling party suffers crushing defeat in mayoral vote

South Korea's governing Democratic Party has suffered a crushing defeat in mayoral elections in the country's two biggest cities, Seoul and Busan. Candidates from the opposition People Power Party (PPP) won both cities by big margins. Both former mayors from President Moon's Democratic Party were accused of sexual misconduct while in office. In Busan, the incumbent resigned. Seoul's mayor was found dead in a suspected suicide.

Northern Ireland executive to meet after sixth night of unrest

The Northern Ireland executive will meet on Thursday morning to be briefed on the ongoing unrest, after a bus was hijacked and set on fire in Belfast during a sixth consecutive night of violence. The vehicle was set alight at an intersectional area between nationalist and unionist communities, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said. Stones were thrown at police while a press photographer was assaulted during the course of their work on Wednesday evening on the junction of Lanark Way and Shankill Road in West Belfast.

RAF engaged in 10-day attack on Isis in Iraq this spring

RAF and other coalition planes last month engaged in the biggest air raids against Isis in two years, in a 10-day mission that attacked up to 100 cave hideouts in Iraq and is likely to have caused dozens of casualties. The attacks concluded on 22 March, the Ministry of Defence said.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has acknowledged his country was facing the worst-ever situation as he addressed thousands of grassroots members of his ruling party during a major political conference in Pyongyang. The North’s official Korean Central News Agency said Kim made the comments during an opening speech at a meeting of the Workers’ Party’s.

"Unlikely to succeed," Bulgaria's PM Borissov says he will propose new government

Bulgaria's long-serving prime minister, Boyko Borissov, announced plans on Wednesday to seek a coalition government after his party came first in Sunday's national election, but he said he was "unlikely to succeed". Following a rise in protest parties accusing it of failing to root out corruption, Borissov’s centre-right GERB will be the largest party in the parliament but far short of majority, with some 26.2% of ballots won. In power since 2009, Borissov, 61, has modernised the country’s crumbling roads and kept its finances in check.

Buddhist monk freed from flooded cave in Thailand after four days

Thai rescue workers have freed a Buddhist monk from a flooded cave, four days after he went inside to meditate. The monk, who was on a pilgrimage, entered the cave in Thailand's Phitsanulok province on Saturday, rescuers say. But an unseasonal rainstorm struck the area on Sunday, causing water levels to rise and flood the cave. A team of 17 divers form a local rescue unit helped to bring the monk out to safety on Wednesday.

China flanks Taiwan with military exercises in air and sea

China's armed forces conducted simultaneous military exercises to the west and east of Taiwan on Monday in a move analysts said was a warning to the self-ruled island and its supporter, the United States. The Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning and its escorts were conducting maneuvers around Taiwan, China's military said in a statement Monday.

Visitors to Thailand need to download health tracking app before arrival

Alongside a negative coronavirus test and time spent in quarantine, Thai officials are now also requiring tourists to pre-register their visit using a special Covid-19 tracker app called Thailand Plus, available on both Android and iOS. You can register your arrival in the app using your Certificate of Entry, a special permit you’ll need to apply for on the website of the Thai embassy or consulate nearest you.

The first-ever human trachea transplant at Mount Sinai in New York

The 56-year-old former social worker's trachea was damaged in 2014 when she had to go on a ventilator because of a bad asthma attack. Sonia Sein went through multiple surgeries in hopes of correcting the problem, but that caused even more damage to her airway. The transplant surgery took about 18 hours and about 50 specialists, including surgeons, nurses anesthesiologists, airway specialists and residents.
