Former US women's soccer goalkeeper arrested on DWI, misdemeanor child abuse charges

Hope Solo was arrested after she was found passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle in North Carolina with her 2-year-old twins inside, police said. A police report said Solo was arrested on Thursday in a shopping center parking lot in Winston-Salem and charged with driving while impaired, resisting a public officer and misdemeanor child abuse. She has been released from jail and has a court date of June 28, the report indicated.

Researchers at The Chinese University of Hong Kong have created a "soft robot" made of slime

containing magnetic particles, which can be manipulated using external magnets. The magnetic particles are toxic, but have theoretically been made safe to enter the human body after being covered in a layer of silicone compound - although further safety testing will be needed in the future. The team in Hong Kong hope the slime will one day be used to collect objects which have been accidentally swallowed.

Mali: military operation in Sahel kills more than 200, says army

The army said on Friday the nine-day military operation beginning on 23 March took place in Sahel’s Moura area – which it termed a “terrorist fiefdom”. The announcement comes as numerous social media reports in Mali this week alleged that dozens of people, including civilians, had been killed in Moura. But the army’s statement said that soldiers killed 203 militants, arrested 51 people and seized large quantities of weapons.

Israeli troops kill 3 Palestinians in West Bank gun battle

Israeli forces killed three Palestinian militants in a firefight in the occupied West Bank early Saturday, police said. Israeli media said four members of a police counter-terrorism unit of the Israeli police were wounded, one of them seriously. The troops came under fire as they attempted to arrest suspected militants in the northern West Bank. Tensions have soared in recent days after Palestinian assailants killed 11 Israelis in separate attacks across the country.

A miniature manuscript written by Charlotte Brontë to go on sale for $1.25 million

A miniature unpublished manuscript written by Charlotte Brontë when she was 13 years old will go on sale at a New York City book fair later this month. The work titled "A Book of Ryhmes by Charlotte Brontë, Sold by Nobody, and Printed by Herself" is smaller than a playing card -- yet it holds a literary treasure of 10 poems by the "Jane Eyre" author. The manuscript, dated December 1829, has not been seen publicly since it was sold in New York in 1916, according to Henry Wessells, an associate at James Cummins Bookseller.

Pope apologises to Canada's Indigenous for abuse at church-run schools

Pope Francis apologised Friday for abuse committed at church-run residential schools in Canada, telling Indigenous delegations at the Vatican it caused him "pain and shame". "I ask for God's forgiveness for the deplorable conduct of these members of the Catholic Church," he said, following meetings this week with survivors from the First Nations, Metis and Inuit aboriginal groups. The pontiff, 85, said he hoped to travel to Canada for the country's St Anne's Feast Day on July 26.

Tunisia crisis escalates as police summon opposition figures

Tunisian anti-terrorism police summoned the country's main opposition figure for questioning on Friday, as a political crisis deepens in the wake of President Kais Saied's move to dissolve parliament and impose one-man rule. Patrick Demarchelier, the fashion photographer who worked with high-profile figures including Diana, Princess of Wales, has died at the age of 78. Mine accident in central Serbia kills at least 8, injures 20

An accident in a mine in central Serbia killed at least eight people and wounded 20 Friday, state Serbian television RTS reported. The accident in the Soko coal mine happened around 5 a.m. The RTS report says part of the mine pit collapsed trapping the miners inside. The head of the medical center in nearby Aleksinac, Rodoljub Zivadinovic, said that 18 people have been hospitalized there, mostly with light injuries.

Dozens arrested in Sri Lanka amid protests over worsening economy

Police in Sri Lanka have lifted an overnight curfew in the country’s capital after arresting dozens of people and quelling unrest that saw large crowds attempt to storm President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s private residence amid anger over a worsening economic crisis. At least 54 people were detained in Colombo’s Mirihana district in the early hours of Friday, the police said, branding the protesters as “organised extremists” trying to “create anarchy in the country”.
